Tulkoff began in the late 1920's as a produce stand run by Harry and Lena Tulkoff, specializing in supplying caterers with fresh fruits and vegetables. By 1930, their horseradish became so popular that the other products were dropped in order to concentrate on producing horseradish. Responding to complaints that pasteboard cartons leaked while being carried home, the first evidence of Tulkoff innovation was seen when the bothersome cartons were replaced with glass jars. Tulkoff Horseradish Products Company was on its way!

Inevitably, Tulkoff outgrew its original site on Baltimore's famed "Corned Beef Row" and moved to its current 15.5 acre complex located a few miles east of the inner harbor. This facility boasts a refrigerated storage area capable of storing up to 5 million pounds of horseradish roots at a constant optimum temperature. Trailer loads of horseradish roots are received almost daily from October through May. Thanks to an exclusive Chill-Mill process which gives Tulkoff its competitive edge in processing horseradish, none of the strong, pungent bite of fresh horseradish is ever lost to manufacturing at Tulkoff.

Over the next half-century, Tulkoff expanded its product line and its distribution network, all the while maintaining its reputation for reliability and personal attention. Tulkoff has become the nation's largest manufacturer of prepared horseradish products including prepared white horseradish, prepared red horseradish, Tiger Sauce (a mild horseradish sauce) and horseradish mustard.

Appropriately, the corporate name has been changed to Tulkoff Food Products, Inc. In addition to its own brands, Tulkoff is authorized to pack private label for major foodservice buying groups throughout the country. In 1997, to better serve its customers on the west coast, Tulkoff opened a second plant in California.

Tulkoff has repeatedly received The Gold Medal Award of Excellence for its foodservice products from The American Tasting Institute, a national panel of renowned chefs. Meeting in "blind" tasting sessions, the chefs judged Tulkoff's Prepared Horseradish, Tiger Sauce, Seafood Cocktail Sauce, Chopped Natural Garlic, Basil Pesto, Tomato and Garlic Pesto and Roasted Red Pepper Pesto to be excellent in taste, appearance and freshness.
